Statement of the Assyrian Democratic Party on the Occasion of the Assyrian New Year 6775
To the Great Assyrian People,
With the dawn of April 1st and the emergence of its blessed light, we celebrate today, along with all Assyrians around the world, the arrival of the Assyrian New Year 6775—this ancient national holiday that embodies renewal, rebirth, and hope. This blessed day reminds us of our deep-rooted heritage in this land, which has always been and will remain the homeland of the Assyrians, and of the greatness of our civilization, which laid one of the earliest foundations of human history.
On this glorious day, which we aspire to see recognized as a national day in Syria and Iraq, we recall the glories of our ancestors who established the first civilizations. We draw inspiration from their rich legacy, fostering the determination and perseverance needed to preserve our identity and national rights. Despite the harsh challenges and attempts at marginalization and uprooting that our people have faced throughout history, the Assyrians have always proven to be an indomitable people—steadfast in their rights, deeply rooted in their land, and resilient against all forms of exclusion and oppression.
This year, April 1st comes at a pivotal moment in Syria’s history. The era of dictatorship that imposed itself for decades—entrenching a system of totalitarian rule, exclusion, and marginalization under the banner of a single party and a sole leader—has come to an end. We had hoped that, following the fall of this regime, we would witness the birth of a new Syria that reflects its ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity. However, what we see today, just months after the change, is not promising. Exclusionary practices persist, a unilateral approach continues to dominate the scene, and the majority-minority mindset deepens at a time when Syria urgently needs all its citizens to heal wounds and build a shared future.
As the Assyrian Democratic Party, we reaffirm our rejection of the constitutional declaration, which has disappointed broad segments of the Syrian people. We call for the implementation of transitional justice and the prosecution of war criminals and those responsible for massacres and violations, which were carried out under the guise of “individual actions,” as well as the prosecution of remnants of the former regime who engaged in repression and corruption. We also stress the need to uphold the rule of law, ensure judicial independence, and elect a parliament that truly represents and serves the people, rather than working against them. In this context, we firmly reject any attempts to divide Syria or to occupy any part of its territory. We also demand clear constitutional recognition of the Assyrian component, our language, and our national and cultural rights in the future Syria.
On this cherished occasion, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to our national project, which aims to unify the Assyrian ranks, solidify our political, cultural, and social rights, and fulfill our people’s aspirations to live in dignity and security on their historical land. Our struggle for self-governance in Iraq is not merely a dream but a legitimate right that requires persistent efforts and collaboration among all Assyrian forces and entities worldwide—free from accusations of betrayal and narrow partisan or personal rivalries.
We, in the Assyrian Democratic Party, call upon all members of our people, both at home and in the diaspora, to hold firmly to their Assyrian identity, support their just cause, and work together in a spirit of unity and solidarity to confront the challenges we face. We also urge the international community to take responsibility for protecting the rights of the Assyrians and ensuring their existence and future on the land of their forefathers.
A salute to all who contribute to the revival of our heritage and culture, both at home and abroad.
A salute to every Assyrian steadfast in their land.
A salute to all who sincerely struggle for a bright future for our Assyrian nation.
Happy Assyrian New Year to our people!
