Statement of the Assyrian Democratic Party on the Formation of the New Syrian Government
The Assyrian Democratic Party is following with deep concern the new ministerial formation in Syria, which has been disappointing and does not reflect the true societal and political diversity of the country. This government, in its current composition, has failed to uphold the principle of fair representation for all components of Syrian society, reflecting a continued policy of exclusion and a lack of genuine recognition of political, ethnic, and religious pluralism.
It is regrettable that the new government includes only one female minister, nominally representing Christians, yet she does not reflect the aspirations of the Assyrian nationalist political movement in all its sects, nor the broader Christian community. Likewise, the representation of Kurds, Druze, and Alawites—with only one minister for each—does not accurately reflect the national presence and active role of these components in Syrian society. Allocating only four ministers out of twenty-four, representing merely 15%, to non-Sunni Arab communities highlights the imbalance in the representation of all Syrian components.
The Assyrian Democratic Party asserts that the formation of a truly national government must be based on fair principles that reflect Syria’s diversity and ensure balanced representation of political and social forces, guaranteeing the effective participation of all components in decision-making. We also stress the necessity of empowering women in leadership positions beyond mere symbolic appointments that fail to represent the popular will.
We believe that this government, in its current form, does not meet the aspirations of the Syrian people for building a just, secular, and democratic state. We reaffirm the need for a genuine political dialogue to reach a governance structure that is more inclusive and representative of all Syrians, regardless of their ethnic, religious, or political affiliations.
