Statement issued by the Assyrian Democratic Party regarding the representation of the Assyrian component in the elections for the Syrian People’s Assembly

The Assyrian Democratic Party is closely and seriously monitoring the developments surrounding the formation of subcommittees and electoral bodies for the upcoming elections of the Syrian People’s Assembly in the Governorate of Al-Hasakah, and the accompanying clear decline in the level of representation of the Assyrian component, under all its ecclesiastical denominations (Syriacs, Chaldeans, and Easterners), within these bodies.

With the release of the final lists of candidates in the various electoral districts of Al-Hasakah Governorate, it has become evident that there are no candidates from our people in the districts of Qamishli and Al-Malikiyah, while the city of Al-Hasakah district includes only one candidate. Meanwhile, the number of members of the electoral body from the Assyrian component does not exceed five members out of a total of 150 members. These facts raise legitimate concerns among our people regarding the prospects for genuine and fair representation in the upcoming Parliament, especially in light of a social and political reality that remains largely governed by tribal, sectarian, and ethnic considerations.

We in the Assyrian Democratic Party believe that the current mechanism of representation is not in line with the historical, national, and demographic presence of the Assyrian component in the Syrian Jazira, nor does it reflect the national, cultural, and political role this component has played over many decades in building modern Syria and preserving its diverse national fabric.

Furthermore, limiting the opportunities for the representation of our people to the possibility of appointment within the one-third quota held at the discretion of Syrian interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa cannot constitute an alternative to our natural right to active participation in the electoral process itself, based on the principle of citizenship and genuine national partnership, away from any form of marginalization or exclusion.

We affirm that the success of any political or electoral process in future Syria must be based on ensuring fair and balanced representation of all national and religious components, and on safeguarding the diversity that characterizes Al-Hasakah Governorate and the Syrian Jazira in general, as a source of strength and richness for Syrian society, not a burden or marginal detail that can be disregarded.

In light of the issuance of the final lists of electoral bodies and candidates, and the approaching date of the elections scheduled for next Sunday, we hold the concerned authorities responsible for the consequences that will result from this clear defect in representation mechanisms, and the potential negative impact it may have on the sense of national partnership and trust in the political process among the indigenous components at this sensitive stage in the country’s history.
