Statement

The Assyrian Democratic Party expresses its deep concern and surprise regarding the recent observation that only the Arabic and Kurdish languages have been adopted on the signs of official institutions in the regions of North and East Syria, following the merger and reorganization of several institutions.

This change represents a clear retreat from the approach that had previously been followed within the institutions of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, where the Assyrian language had been present alongside Arabic and Kurdish on the signs of official institutions, in line with the principles of national, cultural, and linguistic pluralism stipulated in the Social Contract of the Autonomous Administration.

While we affirm that the Social Contract is a specific framework governing the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, the primary responsibility for preserving the rights and guarantees it contains for the various components lies with the institutions of the Autonomous Administration and the bodies that were responsible for overseeing its implementation. The retreat from this approach raises serious questions regarding the actual commitment to the principles previously declared concerning genuine partnership and respect for the rights of all components.

Previously adopting the three languages constituted a positive step that reflected the spirit of mutual recognition among the historical components of the region, foremost among them the Assyrian component, which represents an integral part of the history and present of North and East Syria. The exclusion of the Assyrian language from the signs of official institutions cannot be interpreted except as an unjustified retreat from the principle of pluralism that has long been emphasized.

At the same time, we believe that the Syrian Interim Government, within the framework of its national responsibilities, should take into account the rights of all national components in the country when organizing and managing public institutions, and should adopt clear policies that guarantee these rights in a balanced manner. In this context, we refer to Decree No. (13) issued by the Interim President of Syria, Ahmad al-Sharaa, which addressed the rights of the Kurdish component. This further highlights the necessity of adopting a comprehensive approach that also takes into account the rights of the other national components, including the Assyrian component.

The Assyrian Democratic Party affirms that respect for linguistic and cultural diversity is not merely a formal matter, but rather an expression of genuine recognition of national partnership among the components of the country. Any attempt to marginalize the language or identity of any component will not serve stability nor the future of the democratic Syria to which all Syrians aspire.

Accordingly, we call upon the relevant authorities to address this matter in a manner consistent with the principles of justice and equality, and in a way that ensures the restoration of the Assyrian language in official institutions in Al-Hasakah Governorate in particular, as a confirmation of respect for the rights of all components and in preservation of the spirit of coexistence.
